Every Story Has Roots: How Our Past Shapes Who We Become
We may not choose where our story begins, but we have the power to influence where it goes.
One of the phrases I have often shared with clients and families is: “We can’t always control the cards we are dealt, but we can control how we play them.”
Life has a way of giving each of us a unique set of experiences. Some are filled with support, stability, and opportunity, while others carry hardship, loss, trauma, or challenges that were never ours to choose. The circumstances we experience matter. They shape us, influence us, and become part of our story—but they do not have to define the rest of our story.
At Steadfast Roots Counseling, we believe every story has roots.
Our roots are made up of the people, places, experiences, relationships, and environments that shaped us. Just like a family tree, each branch tells a story. Some branches represent strength, resilience, and traditions passed down through generations. Other branches may hold pain, unresolved wounds, or patterns that continue to impact the way we see ourselves and the world around us.
Understanding our roots does not mean we are stuck there.
It means we have the opportunity to understand where we came from so we can make intentional choices about where we want to go.
Throughout my own journey, I have learned the importance of seeing the world through different perspectives. After spending a year traveling to 11 different countries, I had the opportunity to experience firsthand how differently people live, connect, heal, and navigate challenges. Those experiences deepened my understanding that there is no single way to experience life. Our backgrounds, cultures, families, and environments all shape the way we see ourselves and others.
Yet across every place I visited, one thing remained true: people are resilient. People adapt. People grow. People have the ability to create change, even when their beginnings are difficult.
Therapy is often about exploring those roots—not to place blame, but to build understanding. It is about recognizing the experiences that shaped our beliefs, behaviors, relationships, and coping strategies. It is about identifying the patterns we inherited, deciding what still serves us, and choosing what we want to carry forward.
Our family history matters. Our experiences matter. Our pain matters.
But so does our power.
We have the ability to make independent choices, create new patterns, establish healthier relationships, and write new chapters. We can honor where we came from while still choosing where we want to grow.
Healing does not require us to erase our past. Instead, healing allows us to understand our past with compassion while building a future with intention.
At Steadfast Roots Counseling, we believe your roots are an important part of your story—but they are not the limits of your growth. Every person has the ability to cultivate resilience, find healing, and continue becoming who they were created to be.
Because every story has roots. And every story has the opportunity to grow.
